Ahh, 2008. It brought us some of the best games in recent history. Some of us at VGWL hesitated to write a review about a 7-month old game (because, you know, that's ancient history in the video game industry). But I decided to write it anyway.
I remember how freaking excited I was when I first heard about this game. The premise was so cool - Norse mythology mixed with technology, all bound together by action-RPG style gameplay and fantastic graphics. And, it was designed to be a trilogy. What could possibly go wrong? The demo for Too Human was released on Xbox Live on July 14, 2008, roughly a month before the game's release. I downloaded it that same day and fired it up. Holy crap I was having a good time! I played that demo three to four times that week, and I could hardly wait until August 19. The various upgrades and plethora of items to found kept me coming back for more. Finally, release day came and I got my copy. I began playing the game, already familiar with the first hour or so due to having played the demo so much. But then, I began dying. Constantly. I was pretty damn confused, because in the demo I had no problems kicking ass and getting through the levels. But now it was clear that a new strategy was necessary - hacking and slashing wasn't going to work anymore. Luckily, when you die, you are not forced back to the beginning of the level. You usually start right where you left off, or just before. The graphics in Too Human are beautiful, and the multitudes of weapons, armor, runes, and upgrades will keep RPG fans happy. If you can see past the game's flaws, and there are many, you are in for a rewarding experience. Repetitive battles (how many damn trolls are there exactly?), frequent player deaths, and a lack of camera control are intensely frustrating. However, despite its flaws, I find it enjoyable and disappointed that we may never see a sequel to this great game. If you haven't picked it up yet, now would be the time. Most retailers are selling it for $29.99 or less. |
