THQ's CEO Pleased with Firing 1/4 of Work Force E-mail
Written by Zombone

Let's not take things out of context, but what THQ's CEO Brian Farrell recently stated comes across as pretty pompous and cold-hearted. Apparently canning almost 25% of its work force has saved the publisher a lot of money. No shit!  And how about those people's lives, their bills, and their families? I guess they're gonna have to make some cuts too, eh?

The publisher has managed to save $220 million by giving the little people the axe. We don't see any of the executives taking pay cuts, do you? Mr. Farrell sure is proud of his accomplishments. He recently stated, "Our goal is to return to profitability and generate positive cash flow in fiscal 2010, and to position THQ for long-term sustainable and profitable growth." In other words, he's glad to be rid of the extra weight so that he can blow more sunshine up the asses of his investors? And continue to roll in the dough while his employees struggle and fear a pink slip at every turn?

You'll get no sympathy from us.  In case you couldn't tell, VGWL isn't a big fan of corporate executives who shit on their subordinates.

Mandatory Xbox 360 Update Hits XBL E-mail

A mysterious update hit Xbox Live overnight, one that had been previously unannounced. The ultra-secretive patch  fixes gameplay "interruption" issues, which is pretty damn vague if you ask us. No new features, just that one fix. Seems a little odd, no? I'm willing to bet there were a few other things snuck into that update, but you'll never get a straight answer from Microsoft about it.

Excited about the soon-to-be-released 2.70 firmware for your PS3? So are we. We love firmware updates, as long as they don't break anything. New features are always welcomed, as are stability fixes.

According to the PlayStation Blog, you can expect the following when the patch hits later this month:

  • Text chat with up to 15 people
  • Friends list on the XMB
  • Save video files to external storage

Fire up your copies of LittleBigPlanet and you'll get the prompt to download the latest update, 1.11. The update hit yesterday afternoon,  clocking in at approximately 38MB. It took me about five minutes or so to download, which is great considering the PSN is usualy dog slow for me!  Remember that this is not the Cornish Yarg update (that'll be 1.12), but a fix to patch various DLC.

Action-horror fans will want to take note of this little announcement found in Nintendo Power. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories will be appearing on the Wii as a remake, complete with motion controls and a slightly alternative storyline. Events will unfold in a different order, and your choices in the game affect how the game unfolds. Pretty exciting if you ask us!

EA Nickel & Dimes with Godfather 2 DLC E-mail

Oh, EA. We were praising you just yesterday, and now you've proven once again that you're just another money-hungry conglomeration.

Apparently, if you want the cool weapons, you'll have to shell out some cash for DLC that will be released a few weeks from now. New maps will also be available via DLC, and we have no doubt that most of this content is already on the disk. The game hasn't even been released yet.  This is just another way for EA to nickle and dime you. Our advice: don't buy this shitty DLC, save your money to support developers who don't try to rip you off by selling you access to content that's already on the disk.

EA Releasing DRM Lock on PC Games E-mail

EA's on a roll lately with the good news. I think the mega-publisher is finally realizing that you don't piss off your consumers, especially during tough financial times. While we'd like to think that they're doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, we strongly suspect it's a bottom-line issue: profits. People are getting pissed off with the fascist DRM methods and aren't buying their games. They're opting to pirate them in some cases, and we can't blame them.

A week ago EA announced that the Sims 3 was ditching intrusive DRM. Now, it seems, the publisher is going one step further - unlocking any EA PC game published afer May 2008. Show your support for this awesomeness and tell EA you appreciate it!

Microsoft Laugh at PS2 Price Cut, As Do We E-mail
Written by Zombone

That just-announced PlayStation 2 price cut sure isn't impressing anyone, including Microsoft.  The PS2 is what, like 9 years old now?  For people out there who are a bit behind the times and just now buying a console, it might be a good starter system. There are tons of games available for it, to be had on the cheap. However, that's the key point here - anyone just now buying a PS2 is probably not going to spend a lot of money on software. They'll be buying used games, or bargain bin games, and how does that help Sony? Or hurt Microsoft?

Come on, Sony, announce the damn PS3 price cut already.

PlayStation 2 Price Drops to $99, Crickets Chirp E-mail

In what must be the most "who gives a shit" moment of recent history, Sony has announced a price drop for the ever-popular PlayStation 2. The system can now be had for a mere $99, which, in all seriousness, still seems ridiculous when you can get an Xbox 360 for $199.

The as yet-unnanounced PS3 price drop, which is coming,  would have been much more exciting, don't you think? What are you waiting for, Sony? Wholesale prices don't drop for no reason. We'll just sit back, kick our feet up, and watch it all unfold.
