R.I.P., PSP. Move over for the new king of mobile consoles, the Apple iPhone. Forget the DS - if you want a huge library, variety, and indy games, the iPhone is the way to go. Did I mention that it blows the PSP out of the water?
It's pretty clear that the PSP has a shitty library. Every year, Sony promises that this will be "the year of the PSP". They promise great software, which they never deliver. Great software means more than just one or two good games a year. With more and more developers flocking to the iPhone for full retail games, it's pretty clear that the PSP doesn't stand much of a chance any more. Most of the PSP's value comes from homebrew games, which are easily available online if you know where to look. Almost anyone can flash the PSP's firmware to accept custom apps, games, and even retro titles. That, more than anything, has kept the PSP alive. Not much longer. The iPhone currently sports a library of over 6,000 games. The PSP and DS can't touch that by a mile. Never mind the fact that most of the games on the PSP suck.. there are probably less than twenty worth buying, and the worst part is that they're expensive! Want a new release for the PSP? Be prepared to shell out between $30-40 for that little UMD. At least Nintendo releases some quality titles in the $20-30 range. How about the iPhone? Many games can be had for $5-10, which should be enough to scare even Nintendo. The iPhone sports touch screen capabilities and an accelerometer (motion sensing). What about you, PSP? Oh, that's right - you're still stuck with just one analog stick. Weak. I still have my old PSP "fat" and a PSP "slim". They'll be the last PSPs I ever own, because I won't be buying a PSP-3000 or 4000. Not unless Sony seriously starts supporting the PSP, lowers the price of software, and improves the controls. Probably not gonna happen though, because Sony has its head so far up its own ass it can't see straight any more. So, goodbye PSP, you've been dying a slow death for years and have now been replaced by a superior mobile platform - the Apple iPhone. |
